Service to Older Adults

Sister Margaret Mary assisting individuals

The Sisters of the Holy Spirit were founded as a Diocesan Congregation in Cleveland, Ohio in 1932. They are primarily known for their ministry to older adults at Jennings, but the community traces its roots back to Russia in the mid-1800s through its Foundress, Mother Josephine.

In 1942, an era of excellence began in Garfield Heights, Ohio with the opening of Jennings Hall to serve the area’s older adults. The Sisters of the Holy Spirit gave life to Jennings in honor of Monsignor Gilbert P. Jennings, who had left a planned financial gift to establish a “rest home” after his death. What evolved is an organization with a legacy of compassionate care, quality residences, spirit of innovation and a call to service.

The Sisters of the Holy Spirit emulated a spirit of joy, love and service through a deep sense of mission. Setting examples of core beliefs through their actions, the Sisters held positions at Jennings until 2020 in addition to their religious life. They nurtured a culture of exceptional person-centered care, which is embodied today in Jennings’ staff and volunteers.
