A Calling to Mission
Sisters of St. Francis of Tiffin, Ohio
Nearly two decades have passed since Sister Maggie Slowick, OSF, founded a ministry for desperately poor children in Cuernavaca, Mexico, while studying Spanish there. She established the Cuernavaca Children’s Mission, which helps approximately 80 children and their families each year. The mission assists with medical needs and school fees, and offers meals, tutoring, a library and adult literacy classes.
Sister Maggie has explained, “When we saw that the children were sometimes too hungry to concentrate, we began our meal program.”
Among the volunteer tutors at Cuernavaca are young people who once received help from the mission, some of whom have gone to college.
Mission Appeals given by other Sisters who travel to various dioceses each summer help support this program. Many of the local adults in Cuernavaca have become Associates of our Community, and connect with our Associates in the United States via email and Zoom.
